My Uncle Wiley~~~~~~~~~~~~Sheila Faith

My Uncle Wiley, twinkling blue eyes looking out from his wrinkled, unshaven face, his faded red hair mixed liberally with gray, unwashed, and uncombed. His clothes were dirty and in need of repair; but the cane was new.

I had not seen him since the accident; they did not allow small children at the hospital. But I remember the day it happened. It was near our house. A deep snow had fallen the night before and the roads were icy. I had watched from our front porch as much as the cold would allow.

Daddy came rushing into the house calling for blankets, his brother was trapped under a car in Oscar’s hayfield. He had been walking with his friend, Elmer, which was their custom. Elmer, who lived across the street from our house, was blind since childhood, and used a cane. They were walking up the road to my uncle’s house when a car came around the curve too fast and lost control. It struck both men. Elmer was hurt too, but not seriously, because my uncle had tried to push him out of the way.

We were so far out in the country and with the condition of the roads it would take the ambulance a long time to arrive. The temperature was in the teens with a wind-chill at minus zero. Daddy was near panic; it frightened me.

He rushed back to the scene. Several neighbors had gathered, but none had much hope for my uncle’s survival. They were all of the opinion that trying to move the car and drag him out was futile, and the fact that they were all just standing around watching, angered my dad. He ordered them to ‘help me get my brother out of there!’. It may have been the anger mixed with fear in his voice that brought them out, but they worked together and relieved my uncle’s broken body from the weight of the car.

It was sometime later that I heard the sirens, the ambulance and police arrived. I suppose they did some medical treatment at the scene. When Daddy returned to the house, he was sure Wiley wouldn’t make it. He pulled off his coat in order to get dressed to go to the hospital. He removed a 38 special from his pocket.

“It’s Wiley’s” he explained, “I didn’t want the police to find it on him. I think Ock took Elmer’s”

A blind man with a gun, now that’s scary.

Uncle Wiley had many injuries, the worst of which were his leg was crushed. There was nothing else to do, but remove it just above the knee. It was still touch and go for a while, but he did pull through, that Irish stubbornness can be an access.

Several months later he was fitted with a prosthetic leg. He wasn’t able to live alone after his release, so he was taken in by the people who lived in our rent house. I think the daughter had a crush on him, and at one time, I believe, they were engaged.

It didn’t take him long to learn to walk, and he managed the short distance, including the down and up hill that was our driveway. Now, as he walked across the living room and eased himself down onto our couch, I couldn’t help but stare.

“Wanna see it?” His gruff voice reminded me of my manners, and morbid curiosity caused me to nod even as my mind screamed Run!

As he pulled his pant’s leg up, I saw the shinny pinkness of the leg. He pulled it over his knee and explained to me how the new knee worked, and showed me how he could bend it. I sat beside him and examined the workings of the strange contraption.

I asked him if it hurt. He nodded, but grinned, as if say “yeah, maybe a normal man, but I can take it.”

Winter came and went and by the next Summer things were back to normal, more or less. Uncle Wiley could walk well with his new leg and cane, even drunk, we discovered. Elmer had recovered quickly spending less than a week in the hospital. He and Wiley resumed their Friday and Saturday night parties at Elmer’s house. I could hear the music, the loud voices and laughter, and the occasional gun fire through my open bedroom window.

By day I would watch them walk along the road, the cripple and the blind man. The cripple leading the blind man, Elmer steadying Wiley. Both with canes, 38 specials and probably still half lit. It was indeed a sight to see—to see such loyal friends.

LIFE IS HARD SOMETHIMES

Do you want to be happy everyday?

A POSITIVE ATTITUDE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Your attitude is your thought life turned inside out. Thoughts of worry, fear and freting is a way of saying we don't need God, we can fix everything by ourselves. We either think that God isn't interested or is unable, or just too slow, but if we worry enough we will find our own solution.

It's not our circumstances that make us so unhappy, it is our attitude in them. A positive attitude will put you over, and a negative attitude will keep you under. God does not respond to need, worry, or self=pity, He only responds to faith. Faith in God will bring peace in your life, so that even when you are going through difficult situations, you can still enjoy your life and have a good attitude. Putting your trust in God, in His Love for us, will free us from worry and fear.

Perfect Love casts out all fear. God's love for us is perfect, but we must believe in that love, and believe His will for us is only good things. He is our Ever-Present Help in time of trouble, if we beieve that we can have confidence and maintain a good attitude at all times.

Through faith and patience we inherit the promises. Patience is waiting with a confident attitude. Cast not away your confidence, it has great recompense of reward. Other bad attitudes are selfishness, jealousy, unforgiveness, bitterness and dis-content, all these will lead to unhappy lives if we don't recognize them and change them. We chose our attitudes, they are not thrust upon us. We can chose to be miserable, God will honor our decision.

A person with a attitude of dis-content will never be happy. If that person could have everything they asked for instantly, they would still not enjoy what they had because of their attitude. They expect other people, or things to make them happy. Others are not responsible for our happiness, we along determine that by our attitudes. This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it. We make the decision everyday if we are going to be happy or unhappy. It is a matter of our own free will.

Negative thinking limits God. A bad attitude will cut you off from the help God is so willing to give. It's not that He doesn't want to help you, it's that He can't. He is only moved by faith, He can only work by faith. It's impossible to have faith and a bad attitude at the same time. There are nine fruits of the spirit, love, joy, peace, patience and faith are part of those nine. And like any other fruit they must develope and grow. It takes time, but it's worth the effort. Imagine living every day a quiet, peaceful life patiently enduring whatever is happening around you. It's possible. It's the abundant life Jesus came to give us.

I used to deliberatly pratice patience while atanding in line in stores. I would actually chose the longest line to get into, and I would maintain a good attitude while I waited. I discovered that kindness is a sister to patience,I felt kinder to people while I waited. Also, goodness, and self-control developed in me while I was practicing patience. Now, I am never flustrated in stores, it seems no matter which line I get in, it moves very quickly. I'm not sure if it's just because of my patience attitude or if it actually moves faster. It doesn't matter, because it doesn't bother me to wait in line anymore.

This can be applied to every area, every situation in our lives, the more we practice the easier our lives will become. It's all about attitude. An attitude of trust in God, and waiting patiently for Him to move on our behalf, in our situation. His will for us is only good, and He is interested in every thing that concerns us. So whatever the situation a good attitude will put you over, a bad attitude will keep you in bondage.

Faith with patience! Faith will always bring you out and patience will make the waiting much shorter and more enjoyable.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

email this page printable version
Up-to-Date Info: Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms & Possible Cause

click for more Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling around the joints. RA is often confused with osteoarthritis, which is a condition of wear and tear on the joints.

RA is not a condition of wear and tear that occurs with aging or injury. It is a disease known as an "autoimmune" disease in which your own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation that damages your joints. Normally, the immune system fights against infections and keeps a person's body healthy. However, in the case of RA, the immune system attacks cells in the joints, causing pain and swelling. Over time, people with RA often find that their joints are stiff and do not move properly, causing them considerable pain and discomfort.

Proteus Mirabilis
Proteus mirabilis is a bacterium that is often found in soil, water, and the intestinal tract of many mammals, including humans.
WHAT CAUSES RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (RA)?
Scientists and doctors do not know why people develop rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, researchers are learning more every day. The latest scientific findings suggest that RA may be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, or hormonal factors.

Genetic Factors: One interesting theory is that the tendency to develop RA is genetic, which means that it runs in families. In one study of identical twins, when one twin has RA, up to 30% of the second twins will develop RA in the future. Researchers have found that the tendency to develop RA is related to specific genes. However, not all people who have these genes will develop RA, and

people who do not have these genes can still develop the condition. These findings suggest that other factors also play an important role in the development of RA.

Environmental Factors: Another theory is that RA is caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to bacteria or a particular diet that may occur naturally in certain locations. For example, some scientists have found that patients with RA are more likely than those without it to have been exposed to a bacterium called Proteus mirabilis. Other bacterial or viral infections also may trigger RA.

Researchers also have discovered that some autoimmune diseases, like RA, are more common in certain areas of the world. For example, scientists have suggested that environmental factors, such as not being able to get enough vitamin D, may be part of the reason that people living in Scandinavian countries are more likely to develop diabetes and arthritis. While theories such as this warrant further research, the cause of RA remains unknown.

Hormonal Factors: A third theory is that RA may be affected by hormones. Researchers have found that hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, increase during pregnancy but decrease afterward. This may explain why onset of RA often occurs following child birth or why women with RA who become pregnant often experience significant symptom improvement during pregnancy but have flare ups of RA once they have given birth.

Joints affected by RA
Symmetrical swelling is often associated with RA (e.g., both hands, both elbows, etc.).
RECOGNIZING THE SYMPTOMS
There are a few simple things that people can do to see if they might have rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, to get an early diagnosis, it is important to talk to a rheumatologist, a physician who specializes in the treatment of arthritis. A primary care physician can provide a referral to a rheumatologist.

People with RA have joints that are tender, warm, and swollen. This occurs in a "symmetrical" pattern, meaning that if the left knee is affected, the right knee also is affected. RA often affects the wrist and finger joints closest to the hand, but neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, and feet also may be affected. Other symptoms include pain or stiffness lasting for more than 30 minutes in the morning or after long rest and lack of activity. Patients with RA also may experience fatigue, an occasional fever, or a general sense of not feeling well.

HOW IT OPERATES
The joint pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) begins when white blood cells, which are a part of the immune system responsible for fighting infection, accumulate in the synovial (sin o' vee uhl) tissue. The synovium is a layer of cells that lines the joints and produces synovial fluid, which is a clear fluid that nourishes and lubricates the cartilage and bone in the joint. The white blood cells produce cytokines (site' o kynes), which experts have described as "the messenger molecules of the immune system." Cytokines can cause inflammation, which can result in pain and swelling, which is a normal healthy process when your body has an infection but is inappropriate when no infection exists. They also attract other immune cells and cause the production of excess synovial fluid.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis & its affects In severe cases, RA can often reduce the movement of limbs. Researchers at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) have suggested that an imbalance between cytokines that promote inflammation and those that perform healthy functions within the immune system play a key role in the development of many autoimmune diseases. In RA, several cytokines,
including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1, and interleukin-8, appear to contribute to the ongoing destruction of cartilage, bone, and other joint-related tissues.

ENTERING A NEW ERA OF DISCOVERY AND TREATMENT
Scientists have advanced their understanding of the process of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and this knowledge has led to the successful development of medicines that slow or help inhibit joint damage. According to leading scientists J. Bruce Smith, MD, and Mark Haynes, PhD, "the newer treatments represent the 'tip of the iceberg,' and as our basic knowledge increases, so too, will the armamentarium [the

complete range of weapons] with which we can fight rheumatoid arthritis and other similar autoimmune diseases."

Richard Shirley is but one example of how this continuing research is helping patients with RA. After receiving a biologic DMARD, (disease-modifying antirheumatic drug), he reports "I am doing better now than I have in many years." He also finds that he has dramatically less pain, is able to walk long distances, and can do light housework and minor repairs around the house. As he said so simply, "I enjoy my life."

Getting diagnosed properly

There is no single test that doctors can use to determine if someone has rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Experts recommend that doctors perform several tests to accurately diagnose RA. In fact, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) has developed guidelines for diagnosing RA. The ACR guidelines have been reviewed by rheumatologists (specialists), primary care providers who practice rheumatology, and other health care professionals. According to these experts, a doctor may do all or some of the following to diagnose RA:

* Ask the patient about the amount of joint pain they have, which joints are affected, how long any fatigue or morning stiffness lasts, and if they have problems completing everyday activities like housework or exercise
* Perform a physical examination to count how many joints are tender or swollen and to evaluate mechanical joint problems, such as loss of motion and/or deformity
* Perform blood tests for signs of RA
* Take X-rays of selected joints that appear to be affected by RA

The ACR guidelines also suggest that additional tests be performed to assess liver function and evaluate overall health before beginning treatment for RA and to monitor disease progression as treatment continues over time.
